Why I Love Mardi Himal – A Personal Journey

The Mardi Himal Trek is more than just a trail for me it’s a journey that changed the way I see nature, people, and myself. It’s where I first felt the power of guiding, and the joy of sharing my mountains with the world.

The first time I set foot on the Mardi Himal trail, I wasn’t leading a group. I was walking alone just me, my backpack, and my doubts.
I had just started dreaming of becoming a guide, but I didn’t yet believe I could. Society said I shouldn't. But the mountains? They said otherwise.

What makes Mardi Himal so special?

Mardi Himal is a relatively new trail compared to the famous Annapurna or Everest routes and that’s what makes it so magical. It’s quieter. Less crowded. More personal.
You walk through dense forests of rhododendrons, cross mossy ridgelines, and slowly rise above the clouds until you're eye-to-eye with Machapuchare the sacred “Fishtail” peak.
There’s something intimate about Mardi. The trail doesn’t shout. It whispers. And in that silence, many trekkers including me find peace.

🗺️ A Perfect Short Trek

  • Duration: 5 Days (can be extended to 6–7 for slower pace)
  • Best Season: October–November, March–April
  • Max Altitude: ~4,500m (Mardi Himal Base Camp)
  • Highlights:
    • Dense rhododendron forests
    • Panoramic views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Machapuchare
    • Quiet trails, off-the-beaten-path lodges
    • Magical sunrise at High Camp
It’s ideal for travelers with limited time who still want a high-altitude feel without extreme difficulty.

🌄 My Favorite Moment

One morning, just before sunrise, I stood with my group at High Camp. It was -5°C, we were wrapped in wool, and all we could hear was our breath.
Then light broke over the horizon. Machapuchare turned gold, and the entire Annapurna range lit up like fire. Some of my clients cried. I did too.
Moments like that remind me why I guide. Why I chose this path.

💬 Advice from Me

If you’re considering Mardi Himal, here are a few things I always tell my clients:
  • Don’t rush: The beauty of this trail is in the details the moss, the stillness, the layered valleys below.
  • Hydrate constantly: Even though it’s a short trek, altitude can still affect you. Drink water regularly.
  • Bring walking poles: The downhill sections can be steep especially on the way back from High Camp.
  • Support local lodges: Many are run by small families who’ve opened their hearts (and homes) to trekkers.
  • Disconnect: Phone signals are weak and that’s a blessing. Let the Himalayas reset your mind.

🧡 Why I Keep Coming Back

Out of all the treks I lead, Mardi Himal is the one I return to most. Not because it’s easy, but because it always brings me home back to who I am, and why I walk.
If you’re looking for something that isn’t just beautiful, but meaningful I hope you’ll walk this trail with me someday.
